On July 1 last year I sprained my ankle rolling off a step while watching fire works on top of our building. I hobbled around for days, and finally, grudgingly, went to the doctor, only to be told that I was "getting older" and that my "classic sprain" was going to take as much as 8- to 12 weeks to heal. While the constant throbbing pain has long since subsided, more than a year later my ankle (and foot overall) still hurts.
It's occurred to me that part of the issue might be the 5- to 7 miles, and 7+ hours of standing I do everyday at work using a treadmill desk. Although I enjoy walking while working, I also have to admit that Keith is right when he says that my feet and ankles seem to be permanently swolen from the process.
So today I moved the treadmill out of the office and took the stilts off the desk. I attempted to take the stilts off on my own, and am happy to say a) I didn't break the legs off the desk; and b) after it went crashing down (and I realized I also hadn't busted out the office window) I had the presence of mind to realize there were plenty of wonderful associates upstairs only to happy to help me finish the job. Fortunately for me, all of the co-workers in my immediate area were out on business so I won't have to suffer the harrassing jokes they would otherwise be poised to make.
Since I'm putting in at least 5 hours a week at the gym now, I'm hopeful that I won't see my weight creep up with the lessoned activity.

You are a freak.
Before you go too much further pick up one of those black elastic 'ankle holders' from the grocery store. Wear it when it will be invisible and when you work out. I guarantee it will help the swelling and help the pain. st
