Practice Turkey

It was a beautiful day today - sunny, and not too hot. We spent the majority of the day enjoying the outdoors in our backyard, with me reading my latest stack of magazines and Keith smoking this turkey.

The turkey came out great - it has a wonderful smoky flavor and is incredibly juicy. The cats enjoyed the neck and liver and we had a great turkey salad (turkey, lots of chopped celery, and a bit of mayo). We have lots of leftovers we'll need to work through this week.

I'm hoping we (that would be Keith) will smoke more meats this fall.

The last load of laundry for the weekend is in the dryer and we're now watching 60 Minutes. Tonight the program has interviews with McCain and Obama. What will our Nation talk about in 47 days when the election has come and gone?

Keith and I both travelled last week, he to Bentonville, me to Charlotte. Charlotte has a smallish airport, highways lined with lots of trees (sort of like I-45 Dallas- to Houston, but more like my memories of Atlanta, where all the industrial areas and housing communities are up against the road but camouflaged by the trees). I ate at a chain restaurant and stayed in a chain hotel, next to a chain discount club and several chain fast food restaurants.

The uniqueness of each place seems to be minimized with each passing year. As I watch the candidates on 60 Minutes, I wonder if the candidates have any clue where they are as they travel from place- to place.

Several years ago Keith and I took the train from Dallas to California. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere I asked the car steward where we were. The guy looked out the window for a minute, and then turned to me and say "Why Ma'am, we're on the train!" I suspect the candidates have had their lives reduced to being "on the plane" or "on the bus".
